Covenant has had a tradition of vibrant theatre productions. Even before there was a theatre department, students would produce and direct shows through the Drama Association, usually once a semester. A variety of plays were produced: Coward, Stoppard, Miller, Shakespeare and several original works. Student-produced work remains a vital part of each season.

Plays have often served as the basis for Senior Integration Projects. Students have directed, acted, designed sets or costumes and written plays for this senior thesis project. In addition to the production work, rigorous pre-production research and planning as well as reflection on the process as it unfolds and the final product are elements of these SIPs.

In 2000, the College hired its first full-time theatre professor, Camille Hallstrom, though a full-fledged department did not come about until 2008. The department now produces at least two faculty-directed shows a year and two student-produced shows, as well as teaming with the Music Department to produce a musical.
