My name is Matt Brown, and I am an admissions representative here at Covenant College. I will be graduating in May 2009 with a degree in history.
Since I came to Covenant in the fall of 2004, I have been blessed by the community of musicians here and the diversity of talent, and I will be mainly helping students who are interested in music of any kind (including musical theater!). Just like many high school graduates, I came to college hoping to start a band and play my songs. I came to realize that there are few places as well suited as Covenant for forming and being part of a community of artists and musicians. It's not necessary to be a music or art major, either, in order to be a part of the community and share your gifts with one another. At Covenant, students from all disciplines come together to make music and art and film, and events like the Spring Musical, the Watchtower Film Festival and Catacombs Folk Fest give students a chance to gather around artists and musicians and encourage them in their pursuits.
For me, pursuing music at Covenant was not merely about writing songs and performing; it was learning how to take the gifts that I've been given and use them in the Kingdom of God. The opportunities I've had to work with local churches, the chapel music program, as well as being a part of music ministry trips to Ireland have helped me to think within this context. More importantly, the fellowship and mentorship provided by leaders and friends in those endeavors will stay with me for years to come.
I'm always looking for opportunities to talk about my experience at Covenant. Although I love music, I'm a history major, and if anything it's taught me how to ask the right questions. I hope that I can help you do the same. Cheers!
