Lady Scots Basketball Wins Conference Championship, Advances to Nationals
Covenant College's women's basketball team won the
Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship on February 28, 2009, with a 78-66
victory over Tennessee Wesleyan College.
The win was Covenant's eighth straight, and allows the Lady Scots to advance to
the NAIA national tournament to be held in Sioux City,
Iowa, March 11-18.
The Lady Scots (20-12) were led once again by senior guard Liz Martin. In the three tournament games Martin scored
108 points, and was selected as the AAC
Tournament MVP. Junior forward Erika Forland finished the tournament with 40
points and 38 rebounds, and was an all-tournament selection.
"They are just amazing," Coach Roy Heintz said of his championship team. "This
team has earned everything they have achieved.
They were absolutely focused on winning this conference championship and
advancing to the national tournament."
NAIA Division II National Tournament
The Lady Scots will play defending national champion Northwestern College (Iowa) at 8:00 EST on March 12, 2009, in the first round of the tournament.
