Parents Council Hosts Covenant Gathering in West Michigan
At their home in west Michigan, Covenant parents Jim and Renee DeRuischer hosted more than fifty other parents, alumni, current and prospective students, and other friends of the College. The event offered a chance for diverse people and families, all connected in one way or another to the school, to meet and socialize. President Nielson was also in attendance.
The Covenant College Parents Council exists to cultivate productive partnerships between the College and parents of students. Its members work to assist Covenant in administering the parents program, and function as liaisons between parents and the administration, all to advance Covenant’s mission.
Council members Drew and Jane Jelgerhuis were among the organizers, and spoke of the evening’s success. “The weather cooperated, and it was a beautiful evening of fun, fellowship and a celebration of our united thankfulness for Covenant College,” says Drew.
“We wanted to give President Nielson a real Dutch welcome,” says Jane, who serves as Covenant’s regional director of development for west Michigan. “We had a great turnout from every perspective; somehow everyone was connected through the College. We had food and volleyball and good friends. It was wonderful.
“This is something we’d like to replicate in other places across the country. We want to get people building relationships with others and with the school and then going home and spreading the word.”
Drew and Jane intend to organize similar events in their area again soon, as they work to introduce Covenant to parents and prospective students in west Michigan.
