Covenant Advances to Year Four of NCAA Division III Provisional Membership
The National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Membership Committee has advanced Covenant College into year four of the provisional membership process, effective September 1, 2012.
“We are so honored to have been moved forward to year four,” said Tami Smialek, Covenant’s director of athletics. “This transition to the NCAA has been a campus-wide effort. I would like to thank everyone at Covenant College for their continued support as we strive to become fully-active members of NCAA Division III.”
“The NCAA is clearly the standard for college athletics, and these first three years of provisional membership have required us to meet those high standards in all that we have done,” said Tim Sceggel, assistant director of athletics for internal operations. “We are delighted to move into what we anticipate will be our final year of provisional membership.”
Full membership in NCAA Division III is a four-year process, and the Scots look forward to gaining active membership status by the 2013-2014 academic year. The move to full membership in NCAA Division III will also coincide with Covenant’s move to the USA South Athletic Conference, where they will be eligible for all regular-season championships, including automatic bids to NCAA tournaments, and all other USA South Athletic Conference awards, including all-conference and all-academic honors for its athletes.
Founded in 1906, the NCAA is the governing body for more than 1,100 schools with more than 400,000 student-athletes. In 1973, the membership divided among three divisions. Division III is the largest of all NCAA divisions with 442 institutions claiming membership.
