In Memory of Mrs. La Verne Rayburn
Mrs. La Verne Rayburn, wife of Covenant College’s founding president, Dr. Robert G. Rayburn, went home to heaven on October 1, 2012. The Covenant community mourns with her family, yet rejoices that she is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Dr. and Mrs. Rayburn were married in 1944. Dr. Rayburn was appointed the first president of Covenant College when it was founded in Pasadena in 1955. The Rayburns moved with Covenant to St. Louis. Dr. Rayburn then oversaw the College's move to its current location atop Lookout Mountain, serving as president until 1965.
Dr. and Mrs. Rayburn had four children: Linnea Pett ’66, the late Bronwyn Leonard ’70, Bentley Rayburn, and Dr. Robert S. Rayburn ’72, who currently serves on Covenant’s board of trustees.
“If ever there was a finer model for students of a lady whose life and family were committed to the Lord, I don’t know one,” said former college administrator Allen Duble ’58. “She graciously supported her husband, and her children honored and adored her, as did the students and faculty. She truly was an extraordinarily committed handmaiden of the Lord.”
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 14 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, Washington.
