Favorite place on campus
It is such a treat to live on this gorgeous campus atop a beautiful mountain, but my favorite particular place on campus has to be the Great Hall. I love that we get to eat our meals together in the ballroom of an old luxury hotel. The Great Hall is the perfect place to catch up with friends, see people you don’t normally see during the day, and enjoy some delicious food cooked and served by the delightful dining hall staff.

Honors received at Covenant
Maclellan scholarship, Dean’s list

Why did you choose Covenant?
I never considered Covenant until a spontaneous visit during a family road trip through Chattanooga. To tell you the truth, I was hesitant to visit, because the idea of college searching on summer vacation wasn’t particularly appealing, but I became interested as soon as we pulled up to the gorgeous entrance and were greeted by the friendly, informative admissions staff. When I came for scholarship weekend, I saw the campus alive with students and faculty and knew I wanted to be a part of a community that took relationships, faith, learning, and growing so seriously.

How is Covenant unique?
Faculty, staff, and administrators at Covenant do not simply come to work each day to earn a paycheck and make sure Covenant runs efficiently. The relationships I’ve built with faculty and staff alike have widened my perspective and appreciation for what Covenant is really all about. Whether their time here is spent teaching in a classroom or working in an office, Covenant employees have a passion for students and for this school, and that is something I cannot appreciate enough.

What has been your favorite experience at Covenant?
It’s hard to choose, but Orientation week stands out as a definite highlight. Covenant’s unique LAUNCH program welcomes new students to the school and introduces them to the traditions that we love as a community. I enjoyed it as a freshman, but had an even better time the next year serving as an Orientation Team leader. There’s so much enthusiasm surrounding move-in day, and welcoming new students to Covenant is such a privilege and a joy.

What is your favorite class, and why?
Introductory Chemistry II with Dr. Zuidema. It explores the fascinating basics of organic and biological chemistry in one semester. Ever wanted to make aspirin in lab or wondered why trans fats are bad for your heart? Dr. Zuidema can help with that, and he is clear, straightforward and willing to assist students. He’s also hilarious – ask him about the prank he played on his neighbors using butyric acid.

What person at Covenant has had the greatest impact on you, and why?
So many names come to mind, but Drs. Niel and Kathleen Nielson have probably been the most influential. I had the opportunity to take the course “Character of Leadership” with them freshman year and then took a May term trip to South Africa with them and a group of students. Their commitment to ministry, their love for each other, and their sense of purpose in every activity and group they are a part of is inspiring. They set an excellent example for everyone they encounter.

What’s your favorite part of the day at Covenant?
I love chapel and lunchtime right afterwards. It’s refreshing to gather together with faculty, staff, and students alike in the middle of the busy school day for a time of worship and teaching.

What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to go to graduate school to study public health or health administration. I’d love to work on projects aimed at improving standards of healthy living in communities and increasing the efficiency of the health care system.

How is Covenant equipping you for the future?
Not only have I learned the four levels of protein structure and the role of hydrogen bonding in DNA replication, but I’ve also learned about the cultural heritage of the West, the basics of Christian doctrine, and the tensions Christians face working in various disciplines in a fallen world. The liberal arts foundation I am receiving at Covenant is preparing me to be culturally competent and considerate of other perspectives and viewpoints. Covenant is teaching me the value of investing in communities and cherishing wholesome traditions.
