The Building Maintenance Technician is responsible to the Supervisor of Maintenance & Operations for painting, refinishing, and maintenance of exterior and interior structures and surfaces across campus.


  • Prepare and finish surfaces of sheetrock, wood, metal, and masonry; apply prime and finish paints, varnishes, lacquers, and other coverings with brush, roller or spray gun.
  • Responsible for refinishing furniture such as desks, chairs, tables, and bookcases as required.
  • Identify different types of sealants with knowledge of how to apply these to various construction substrates, and ability to properly select brushes, rollers, pads, mitts, and other related accessories for applying paint.
  • Responsible for correctly storing and maintaining brushes, rollers, and other equipment after each use.
  • Responsible for the safe use of riggings, hoist, ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and calculation of scaffold loads, concentrated loads, and cantilevered loads
  • Maintain clean and orderly work stations.
  • Properly use  personal protective equipment and procedures in all chemical handling.
  • Supervise and train student labor in accordance with college authorized safe work procedures and shop task training manuals.
  • Keep current on all OSHA. required documentation including MSDS. instruction, material handling safety, blood borne pathogen instruction and job safety instruction.
  • Coordinate the painting schedules for campus, and keep an updated list of paint colors and selection options.
  • Assist with light carpentry and building maintenance duties across campus as needed.
  • Fulfill other such duties as assigned by the Supervisor of M&O, including specifying and coordinating work by an outside contractor.
  • Respond to after-hours call-in for campus emergencies, or assist M&O shops as directed by the M&O Supervisor


  • Ability to relate to others in a cooperative and mature Christian manner with good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to drive college vehicles for errands, special events, and shuttle service.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and lifts, including but not limited to an articulating boom lift, backhoe, and tractors.


  • High school diploma
  • Three years commercial painting experience


  • Working knowledge of Google applications


  • An acceptance of and commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
  • An understanding of the mission and purpose of Covenant College.
  • Must be able to assent to Covenant College’s Staff Commitments.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.


  • Work in potentially hazardous situations/environments involving chemicals, solvents, vapors, heights, ladders, platforms, confined crawl spaces
  • Sitting less than 10% of the day
  • Carry/lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Standing and walking for the majority of the day
  • Lifting, pushing, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling at least 50% of the day. 
  • Sitting less than 10% of the day
  • Environmental conditions: humidity, heat, cold, wet conditions, noise, and vibration
