POSITION SUMMARY
The Groundskeeper is responsible to the Campus Grounds Supervisor for general campus landscaping, lawn care, and seasonal maintenance needs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain lawns on campus - mowing, trimming, edging, cleaning up debris, etc.
  • Maintain flower beds and shrubs - weeding, pruning, planting, mulching, etc.
  • Support standards and procedures for departmental effectiveness, adhering to schedules, and ensuring the completion of all cultivating activities as directed
  • Respond to seasonal needs, such as leaf, debris, and snow & ice removal as well as winter clearing of campus wooded areas
  • Responsible to safely operate lawn equipment and potentially heavy equipment which may include tractor, backhoe, and other related equipment
  • Assist supervisor with the assigned work-study student labor in all work and safety matters, training and directing them to achieve the quality of work expected to be complete
  • Perform work in a safe and responsible manner, maintaining a safe and orderly shop work area, as well as work sites on campus. Know and use proper personal protection equipment and procedures, training and supervising student workers in all work and safety matters
  • Be on call for safety and emergency response efforts in the event of storms throughout the year particularly winter storms
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Grounds and Athletic Fields Supervisor

  • Ability to effectively interact with various constituencies of the college, both internal and external 
  • Ability to multi-task and supervise others, exercising good judgment and acting as an appropriate problem-solver
  • Able to drive college cars, trucks, and vans for errands and the transport of equipment; able to operate lawn equipment and able to be trained to operate other heavy equipment

 REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Up to two years of experience in turf/landscape maintenance or related field
  • Proficiency with Google Apps or Microsoft Office Suite

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in turf grass or horticulture related fields is a plus 
  • Knowledge of irrigation system maintenance and general equipment maintenance

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • An acceptance of and commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
  • An understanding of the mission and purpose of Covenant College
  • Must be able to assent to Covenant College’s Staff Commitments

 PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Standing and walking for the majority of the day  
  • Stooping and squatting periodically 
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. regularly
  • Sitting periodically

This job is physically demanding and requires: Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, operating, proper body mechanics, mechanical rolling accommodation; environmental conditions: wet, humid, hot, cold, noise, and vibration. Must be able to safely work in potentially hazardous situations/environments involving power equipment, chemicals, solvents, vapors, heights, ladders, platforms; have sufficient hearing to work safely and cooperatively
