SUMMARY

The HVAC Technician is responsible to the Lead HVAC Technician to install, troubleshoot, repair, service and maintain all college owned Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning equipment and systems as assigned.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Assist in working on all emergencies, work requests, and special projects as assigned on the following:

    1. Refrigeration Equipment including-- Walk-in freezing & cooling units, Refrigerators, Ice makers, and Ventilation system.

    2. Cooling systems for all campus buildings including- Direct exchange cooling units, Window air conditioners, 40 ton thur 300 ton (Screw, Reciprocating, Scroll and Hermetic) Chillers, and all related equipment such as compressors, heat exchange systems, Fans, circulating pumps, and all related controls.

    3. Heating systems for all campus buildings including—Direct exchange units, electric, LP and natural gas furnaces, Natural gas Steam boilers & water boilers, and all related equipment such as Burners, Heat exchange systems, circulating pumps and all related controls.

    4. Assist in maintaining water quality standards and treatment for closed loop systems.  

    5. Dehumidifiers, Humidification systems.

    6. And any other equipment using Freon such as MO99, R22, R407C and 134A.

  2. Assist in maintaining a program of inspection and preventative maintenance with all HVAC equipment.

  3. Assist in Scheduling and maintaining an air filter-servicing program for all college buildings.

  4. Perform work in a safe and responsible manner, maintaining a safe and orderly shop work area, as well as work sites on campus. Know and use proper personal protection equipment and procedures in all chemical handling, confined space entry, and fire/explosion hazards.

  5. As assigned, supervise student employees of the HVAC shop and instruct them in safe work procedures as established by the college/OSHA and shop task training manuals.

  6. As assigned, requisition materials and supplies. Keep required logs and records for the shop operation and make work drawings as assigned.

  7. Maintain familiarity with all current regulations concerning chloroflurocarbons and hydrochloroflurocarbons, and the proper handling, storing, reclaiming, purchasing, and use of such materials that are considered ozone hazards set up by the EPA.  This includes, but is not limited to, all current and forthcoming EPA regulations concerning these materials. All HVAC work to be performed in a manner consistent with such regulations. Which includes maintaining a program up to date that tracks all usage, leakage, purchases, any sells, and recycled refrigerant.

  8. Become proficient with, and maintain the campus building automation systems and its related components, managing building HVAC and campus lighting systems for efficiency.

  9. Become operationally familiar with electrical supply panels/switches as they relate to HVAC equipment and systems.

  10. Respond to after work hours call-in for HVAC emergencies or to assist others. A cell phone (preferably a smartphone) is required. A stipend is offered to employees to offset cellular expenses.

  11. Assist in maintaining safety training that includes the use of equipment and a SDS book.

  12. Braze, solder or use a welder to maintain equipment as needed.

  13. Cover the duties of the Lead HVAC Technician when Lead HVAC Technician is on vacation or sick.

  14. Fulfill other such duties as assigned by the Lead HVAC Technician and M&O Supervisor.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Remain in a stationary position at least 25% of the work day.

  • Frequently moves items weighing up to 50 pounds.

This job is physically demanding and requires: Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, operating, proper body mechanics, mechanical rolling accommodation; environmental conditions: wet, humid, hot, cold, noise, and vibration.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position.  Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma.    

  • Two years experience in HVAC servicing and repair, or equivalent.

  • EPA certificate to handle CFC’s and HCFC’s.
