POSITION SUMMARY
The Master Carpenter oversees the scenic aspects of dramatic production for Covenant College Theatre, by overseeing and/or doing the work of set building, and props fabrication. The Carpenter is responsible for managing set construction budget; purchase of scenic materials; training and supervision of student workers, crew and temporary staff workers; attending production meetings and rehearsals as needed.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate with set designer and oversee the building of sets for producing a season of 2-3 straight plays in a small 190-seat house, as well as 1 musical in a larger venue within budgetary constraints 
  • Supervise student workers to accomplish this work by teaching basic construction, scenic painting, and prop fabrication skills
    • Supervision includes making work assignments, verifying hours worked, processing time cards, etc. as appropriate for students doing work study, Theatre Seminar hours, and/or Production Practicum Hours
  • Order, purchase and borrow scenic and related materials in collaboration with the Theatre Manager; supervise the use of and inventory of scenic and related materials and return borrowed items 
  • Assist the Charge Artist in completing the painting of the sets
  • Manage installation of set elements
  • Maintain the integrity of the set during performance period
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of stage area as well as other storage/build areas on and off-campus
  • Attend production meetings for plays in production, plus other departmental meetings as called
  • Attend rehearsals and provide advisement as needed
  • Coordinate with FURF approver for use of space

 COMPETENCIES

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in carpentry
  • Strong creative, management, organizational, building, and/or scene painting skills
  • Strong initiative to complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to multitask

 REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience managing budgets and supervising crew personnel
  • Proficiency with Google Apps or Microsoft Office Suite

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in carpentry and theatre
  • Working knowledge of Google Apps and experience with a website content management system

 PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Sitting: Sitting likely for portions of the day, but much freedom to stand and walk at will
  • Lifting: Lifting or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) 35 lbs.
  • Standing, etc: significant standing, bending, squatting, carrying for building, painting and related purposes
  • Must be able to work on ladders
