How did you choose Covenant?

My father is a PCA pastor and I grew up attending summer camps held on Covenant’s campus, though I knew very little about the school itself. Once I graduated high school I made the decision to attend Coastal Carolina University, a school in my hometown. While there, I began to wrestle deeply with my faith and realized that I had a lot of anger and bitterness toward God that I had never expressed. During my sophomore year, I told my friends and family that didn’t want to be a Christian and I left my home and my church to pursue the life I thought I wanted instead. Thankfully, Christ didn’t let me run for long. He patiently and lovingly called me back to himself over the next two years and in the fall of 2012, my senior year at Coastal, I gave my life to Christ. I felt that returning to Coastal the next semester would be harmful for me spiritually, so I took time off to pray and receive some much needed counseling. During that time, my counselor asked me if I could go anywhere in the world, where would I go? Without pause, I told her Covenant College. I wanted to be in a place where I would be surrounded by other believers, and learn to take all the biblical knowledge I’d learned and allow it to reach into my heart. While I was a student at Covenant, the Lord provided the people and education to do just that.

Most influential class at Covenant

Theology of Scripture with Dr. Madueme. My favorite thing about the class was the unique way it was structured. There were only 15 students in the class and each class period we would all come having read an article or book and have open discussion for the entire class period. Dr. Madueme was a fantastic facilitator for this style of discussion and would ask difficult and controversial questions that really challenged me to consider how I think and talk about my belief in Scripture.

Best college memory
If I have to narrow it down to one specific memory, it has to be filming for Founders Music Video NIght with the girls on my hall, Gracewell. Collaborating, laughing, and midnight editing all led up to us winning first place that year.

Novella Long

“Singing in the Stairwell in Andreas with everyone is probably the coolest experience I’ve had; I do it almost every Sunday and it just never gets old. Shouting 'Were You There' at the top of my lungs, rejoicing with everyone, and shaking the walls with praise is such an amazing feeling.”
