the Covenant experience narrative

The Blue Tribune is your place to learn about all things Covenant and keep up with stories from campus and beyond. By guiding you through the different aspects of Covenant, we'll help you decide if you want to pursue your very own Covenant experience.

Academic Excellence & Student Success

At Covenant College, we value academic excellence, and we want all of our students to reach their full potential. This doesn’t mean you have to be a straight-A student or take 18 credit hours every semester. It means that our campus wants to support you so that you can thrive, learn, and expand your mind, regardless of your GPA.

So what does it mean for a campus to value academic excellence and help students succeed?

It means our faculty are highly-educated, but they also love engaging with students.

With a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, your professors are accessible outside of the classroom. Some students even get to work with professors and/or complete academic research while in their undergrad. For example, Jack Stimart ’21 and Janet Jian ’21 recently worked with Dr. Zuidema (chemistry department chair) on a research article published in the Journal of Chemical Education.

It means you have options to choose from.

We currently offer 51 majors (with 27 concentration options) and 31 minors. We also have 7 certificates for students who want to learn more about a particular career and get practical preparation in that field. Finally, we have 5 pre-professional advising tracks that pair with your major to guide graduate school decisions.

It means we offer you support.

Math comes easy to some people, writing is second nature for others, and to others still, learning a new language is no big deal. For anyone who needs a little help in any of these areas, our Writing Center, Math Center, and Language Lab offer support and peer tutoring.

Also, the Center for Student Success is available to any student who could use extra support. This center provides tutoring, personal advising, and time management support. If you have a learning disability, there is no reason that you can’t thrive at Covenant - the center will help you succeed, whether through extended time for testing or one-on-one tutoring.

It means you complete a Capstone Project.

Throughout your time as a Scot, you’ll hear references to The Capstone Project, a project you complete your senior year. Similar to a bachelor’s thesis, The Capstone Project is the culmination of your education and specific interests, and you put into practice the integration of faith and learning.

Students are guided by faculty as they complete their projects, and each capstone reflects the student’s particular interest. You choose a topic you want to explore in-depth, which makes each Capstone unique and fascinating. The project helps prepare you for graduate school and a successful career. Some students have even used their Capstones to launch entrepreneurial efforts and other careers.
