Schaap Is Nick Barker Writer in Residence

Dr. James Schaap

Dr. Jim Schaap, a professor of English at Dordt College, is Covenant College's 2010 Nick Barker Writer-in-Residence.

Dr. Schaap will speak on "Amazing Grace" in chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 20. On March 16, he will give a literary reading in Brock Hall 118-120. The public is invited to attend both events.

An award-winning novelist and essayist, Schaap has authored many books, including Sixty at Sixty: A Boomer Reflects on the Psalms, Romey's Place, and Touches the Sky. Stories and articles he has written have been published in journals such as Christianity Today, Prairie Schooner, The Reformed Journal, and Image.

The Nick Barker Writer-in-Residence program is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous Covenant alumnus who wanted to honor the late Dr. Nick Barker, former professor of English and vice president for academic affairs. This grant enables the English department to bring to campus each year an established writer to teach an intensive writing course, to interact with students, and to present a public reading and a chapel address. This grant has previously brought to Covenant's campus Billy Collins, Leslie Leyland Fields, and Robert Siegel.
