Musical Theatre: Aida
Covenant’s music department and theatre & film studies department present five performances of Aida, the Broadway musical featuring music by Elton John and Tim Rice. Based on Verdi’s Italian opera, this production is directed by Visiting Theatre Professor Deborah Kirby, under the musical direction of Dr. Rosella Ewing and conductor Lok Kim, and choreographed by Barry VanCura of Ballet Tennessee.
"This musical is based on the book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls and David Henry Hwang," says Kirby. "I hope the audience will enjoy hearing this pop-rock score that features stirring ballads and rousing choral numbers.”
Aida is an Egyptian story of loyalty, betrayal and forbidden love, in which three people are forced to make difficult decisions that change the course of history.
“Dr. Jeanell Brown, Prof. Claire Slavovsky and I worked together to decide on which musical we would be doing this spring,” says Kirby. “I was just delighted and humbled to be asked to direct, as this is the first time that the theatre and music departments are working together on the musical.”
The event begins at 8:00 p.m. in the chapel on March 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31, 2012. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for faculty and staff, and $5 for children and students with valid ID. Call 706.419.1453 to make reservations.
