Rookmaaker Jazz Festival to Celebrate New Scholarship for Jazz Students
A donor has generously endowed the Rookmaaker scholarship for incoming students pursuing jazz music education at Covenant College.
The scholarship is named in honor of the late Hans Rookmaaker, Christian thinker, arts scholar, and friend of Francis Schaeffer. To celebrate the new scholarship, Covenant College will host the first ever Rookmaaker Jazz Festival on March 12, 2018.
In memory of Hans Rookmaaker’s faithful awareness of Christ’s preeminence in art, specifically in the jazz music community, the festival will emphasize the value of the arts to Christian thinking and behavior. This topic will be explored through a chapel lecture from Rev. Dr. Bill Edgar and with music by Ruth Naomi Floyd. Bill Edgar is a professor of apologetics at Westminster Theological Seminary where he applies his knowledge of covenantal apologetics with his interest in African American music and culture. Esteemed musical guest Ruth Naomi Floyd has been expressing her faith through vocal jazz since 1993. She has recorded five albums including “Root to the Fruit” in 2006.
Following the lecture, attendees will have the opportunity to attend an evening jazz concert with Bill Edgar, Ruth Naomi Floyd, and New City Fellowship director of music, James Ward, at 8:00 p.m. in the Kirk. A dessert reception will follow. Covenant welcomes the public to attend both events at no charge. For directions to the Kirk, check out our campus map.
