Faculty Members Edit & Author Booklet Series

On July 9, 2014, P&R Publishing will release the first four booklets in a series on faithful learning. Edited by Dr. Jay Green, professor of history at Covenant, the Faithful Learning series explores various academic disciplines from a Christian perspective. In addition to providing insight on how Christianity shapes scholarship, the booklets ask readers to think about how work in the academic field can help form their faith.

“Traditionally we think of how our faith informs our work as scholars, and that’s an important part of what we’ve done since Covenant was founded,” said Prof. Green. “In this case, rather than merely being concerned with a Christian theory of the disciplines, we’re asking the question: ‘How does our faithful attendance to the academic disciplines shape our understanding of faith?’ This series and each booklet will take up a different discipline and invite potential students of those disciplines to study them wholeheartedly.”

The first installment of booklets includes An Invitation to Academic Studies by Prof. Jay Green, Literature by Prof. Cliff Foreman, Philosophy by James Spiegel, and Sociology by Prof. Matt Vos. In each of these and subsequent booklets, the author will focus on his or her discipline and explore how work in that field is a gift from God and how serious academic study glorifies God. Readers will be encouraged to vigorously pursue academic work as a part of God’s incredible creation.

“We can engage these disciplines with confidence,” said Prof. Green. “And in doing so, I believe we can come to a better understanding of what it means to love God and to love our neighbor.”
