On Thursday, August 25, 2016, Covenant College held its sixty-second annual convocation ceremony, welcoming the Class of 2020 to campus and beginning a new academic year. President J. Derek Halvorson ’93 presided over the ceremony; Dr. Scott Jones, professor of biblical studies, provided the invocation; and Dr. Rebecca Pennington, professor of education, delivered the convocation address.
Pennington’s address, humorously titled “Chocolate Cake and the Day I Learned I Was a Horrible Person,” delved into the question of human identity and a Christian’s identity in Christ.
After the address, three new faculty members were installed: Dr. Jiewon Baek, assistant professor of foreign language; Dr. John Rush, assistant professor of economics; and Tim Sceggel, director of athletics and physical and sport education administrative faculty member.
Trustee Rev. Kevin M. Smith, pastor of New City Fellowship, provided a charge to students from the board of trustees, and Rodney Miller, dean of records, introduced new students to campus to the sound of overwhelming applause from the Covenant community.
Students, faculty, and staff concluded the ceremony with the congregational singing of the College hymn, “All for Jesus.”
The Pipe & Drum Corps led the recessional out of the chapel and officially kicked off the 2016-17 school year.
