Severe Rain Causes Portion of Bank To Collapse, Repairs Underway

On September 21, 2009, severe rain in the Chattanooga and North Georgia region caused a small portion of the bank on the eastern edge of Covenant College's campus on Scenic Highway to collapse, just south of the College's main entrance. No one was injured. The affected portion of Scenic Highway is closed while the Georgia Department of Transportation is on site, working to have the road ready for service as soon as possible.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., the College evacuated Brock Hall and the Dora Maclellan Brown Memorial Chapel out of an abundance of caution. Though we are not aware of any leaks, gas lines were exposed due to the collapse of the bank. Atlanta Gas Light is on site inspecting the lines, and the College will reopen the buildings once the gas company verifies that there are no leaks.

Today's chapel service is cancelled, and all classes in Brock Hall and the chapel are cancelled until 1:00 p.m. An announcement will be made at 12:30 p.m. regarding afternoon classes in Brock Hall and the chapel. Classes in other campus buildings are continuing as scheduled.

Further updates will be posted here as appropriate.
