Craig M. Lyon, 1924-2014
Craig Lyon, who graciously served Covenant College as hostess for nearly thirty years, passed away on November 14, 2014.
In the early 1970s Mrs. Lyon began serving as the hostess of Covenant, living in Carter Hall for twenty-seven years before retiring in 2000. After her retirement, Mrs. Lyon continued to serve the College, helping host special events and cheering on the Covenant Scots. Her legacy of generous hospitality continues as Covenant students eat every meal in the Craig M. Lyon Great Hall.
“Craig Lyon was a remarkable servant of Christ who had an indelible impact on the Covenant College community,” said Covenant College President Derek Halvorson. “Over her many years of service as the College’s hostess, she touched thousands of lives with her grace, hospitality, and Southern charm. Having lived down the hall from her for my four years as an undergraduate, I can personally attest to her decorum and manners, and also her patience and healthy sense of humor. As the College celebrates fifty years in the old Lookout Mountain Hotel, it seems fitting that we would mark that time by celebrating the home-going of one who made that building such a welcome home for so many students and guests. We thank God for Craig Lyon, and we delight in knowing that she now enjoys the hospitality of her heavenly Father.”
Mrs. Lyon is survived by three of her children, Paul, Arralee, and Steven Chad, along with ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Mrs. Lyon was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clinton, SC, on November 16, at 3:00 p.m. A second memorial service was held in Monroe, LA, at Covenant Presbyterian Church on November 19, at 10:00 a.m. The College plans to have a memorial service for Mrs. Lyon in early 2015.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Covenant College, 14049 Scenic Highway, Lookout Mountain, GA, 30750.
