Dr. J. Derek Halvorson, President


President Derek Halvorson

Derek Halvorson became Covenant’s sixth president in 2012.

 

Dr. Halvorson graduated cum laude from Covenant in 1993 with a bachelor of arts in history. After a time trading foreign currencies for NationsBank in Charlotte and NationsBanc-CRT in Chicago, he earned a master of arts from the University of Arizona, where he studied under Reformation historian Heiko A. Oberman.

 

From there, Dr. Halvorson earned a Ph.D. in history from Loyola University Chicago. His primary field of study was late medieval and early modern Europe, with a minor concentration in ancient Greece and Rome. While at Loyola, he taught undergraduate courses in the history of western civilization and received multiple fellowships for his teaching and research.

 

Dr. Halvorson has chaired sessions for the Conference on Faith and History as well as presenting papers at the American Historical Association and the Medieval Intellectual History Colloquium at the Newberry Library. He contributed translation work to William Yarchin’s History of Biblical Interpretation and has reviewed for the Anglican Theological Review.

 

From 2003 to 2009, Dr. Halvorson worked at Covenant College, first as director of constituent relations and then as regional director of development, contributing to an array of external relations and communications projects and serving as one of the lead major gift officers in Covenant’s successful BUILD campaign.

 

In 2009, Dr. Halvorson accepted an offer to serve as president of Providence Christian College, now located in Pasadena, California. He served there until 2012, when he returned to Covenant as president.

 

Dr. Halvorson’s wife, Wendy, is a graduate of Wheaton College and a former finance manager. Together, they have a son, Banks, and a daughter, Whitman. When he is not spending time with his family, Dr. Halvorson enjoys both watching and playing soccer.

 

Ordained in 2003 as a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), Dr. Halvorson has served on the PCA General Assembly Host Committee (2005). He and Wendy are members of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.
