Student Senate

2013-14 Student Senate

Student Senate exists to insure that students have an active voice in campus issues, problems, and student rights. The Senate provides leadership and direction in the planning and implementation of activities which promote spiritual, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. In all of its functions, Student Senate strives to recognize Christ’s preeminence.

Student Senate has selected Philippians 2:1-4 as its Scripture passage for the 2013-2014 year:

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Other interests on and off campus

Anyone who knew me prior to college would be shocked if I listed any outdoor activities in my interests. Rock climbing, whether at Tennessee Boulder Authority or at Sunset Rock, has become one of my favorite actives. The surrounding area of Lookout Mountain also boasts some great places to camp with friends. As weird as this sounds, I also really enjoy all of the accounting, economics, and finance classes I have taken at Covenant.

Describe Covenant in three words

Modeling Christ-like Life

Favorite Covenant memory

Camping on a bluff during a tropical storm the first week of school in 2011. As Peter Bradshaw said to convince me to do this, “if you don’t get a good story out of it, then it’s not worth doing.”

Goal on Senate this year

My main goal will be working on the efficiency and communication regarding student funds. As a whole, I think senate will strive to continue to improve the representation of the student body as a mediator between students and the administration.

Dance parties of any kind (Chattacon included), running, baking, the great outdoors, Saturday morning pancakes, studying all the interesting stuff, reading all the good books, making my way to nifty new places, laughter and conversation with friends, and finally-nothing gets me jazzed quite like talking about urban public spaces!

Describe Covenant in three words

Academic, B-A-N-A-N-A-S, Christ-centered. Those are just the ABC's, guys. I could use all 26 letters no problem.

Favorite Covenant memory

There are too many to count! Some of the best are better left unsaid. Ask me sometime about Chattacon, music videos, "Modell," or my personal experiences during the tornado apocalypse of 2011 for some quality answers.

But if I have to go with one for now—let me tell you about playing football in the library freshman year. The fact that such a thing even happened makes me pretty happy, but one specific incident will probably live in infamy. I was a newbie at the whole library football thing, but boy oh boy was I enthusiastic. While going for a pass from one side of the upstairs to the other, I was running a little too fast, looking a little too much behind my shoulder, and looking not nearly enough in front of me and...I ran directly into a wall. Hard. The rest is a blur of sliding to the floor and a lot of laughter. Everything about that event still makes me laugh and gives me a little motivation to go study in the library—because you never know what may happen!

Goal on Senate this year

As senior class president, I want to give my class lots of quality, fun opportunities to spend time together, invest in each other and in the Covenant Community as we get ready to graduate and leave this home of the last four years. My hope is that my role representing and encouraging the senior class will be one that helps us to spend our year investing in not only our class but in the student body as a whole and that we would leave here both thankful for our past and excited for the future.

I have two favorite memories of Covenant, and the first is when some of the student body, including me, did the Harlem Shake (YouTube dance video) in the chapel. My second favorite memory was when the women’s and men’s basketball team travelled to Costa Rica for a mission trip this past Christmas. That was the best and most fulfilling Christmas and birthday present ever.

Goal on Senate this year

My goal on Senate this year is to make difference. Since my title as the Andreas building president is brand new I want to set the bar high and be the best president I can be for my building. Favorite Covenant memory

During finals week last year, a friend built a fort in the middle of Third Lobby out of all the lobby furniture and a collection of sheets. It was a final project for her art class that seemed to morph into a community effort. Founders residents studied for exams inside it drinking coffee, listening to music, and generally distracting each other. I wish it could have been a permanent addition to the building!

Goal on Senate this year

I want to honor my brothers and sisters in Founders this year by prioritizing efficiency and communication in event planning
