Student Senate

Student Senate

Student Senate exists to insure that students have an active voice in campus issues, problems, and student rights. The Senate provides leadership and direction in the planning and implementation of activities which promote spiritual, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. In all of its functions, Student Senate strives to recognize Christ’s preeminence.

Student Senate has selected Philippians 2:1-4 as its Scripture passage for the 2013-2014 year:

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Some of my favorite things to do are watching the sun rise over the overlook on my way to class, going in the Great Hall in the afternoons when it is quiet to work on homework, going to the gym when it is busy, participating in my church's pot luck lunches the first Sunday of every month, taking long walks with friends on nice days, spontaneously going to Sonic for happy hour, and getting off the mountain for a meal every once and awhile. Don't ask why, but I also like going to Walmart.

Describe Covenant in three words

Community, weird, beautiful.

Favorite Covenant memory

My favorite memory of Covenant is from working here last summer. I lived in the student apartments where I met some great people with whom I played soccer, shared meals with, had prayer and praise times, hurt and grew with. While it was the hardest summer of my life, it was also the very best summer of my life.

Goal on Senate this year

My goal on Senate this year is to build community within the student body, but especially within the senior class.

I lead the Covenant College Pipe Band as the pipe major. I don't actually get off the mountain that much, but if I do, I love roaming around downtown Chattanooga. It's a beautiful city.

Describe Covenant in three words

Fun, comfortable, and challenging.

Favorite Covenant memory

As far as favorite, that one Sunday where it was sunny and beautiful, just hanging out with friends, procrastinating the day away. But as far as a good story? On the first day of school, I had just gotten my Scots Card photo taken and I hopped in line for lunch. Who's in line next to me, about to become one of the first people I meet at Covenant? Ian Webb, who is now the Founders President. One of the first things we did was compare heights. It was just such a funny thing to have the first person I had an actual conversation with end up being such a good friend.

Goal on Senate this year

To be the voice of the sophomore class, and as cliché as it sounds, to glorify God in all I do.

Describe Covenant in three words

In just three words, I see Covenant as a: Christ-centered community. Plus, each of those words starts with a "C" so it looks decent on paper too.

Favorite Covenant memory

My favorite Covenant memory would have to be going to Founders Music Video Night 2014. Brethren absolutely killed it!

Goal on Senate this year

My goal as Founders Hall President this year is to serve and lead the Founders community in whichever way possible!

Other interests on and off campus

On campus I love participating in RUF, intramurals, and hanging out with friends. Off campus, I enjoy being a volunteer for LMPC's Wednesday night kids' club, exploring downtown Chattanooga, late night trips to Walmart, driving around with the windows rolled down and the music blasting, and getting familiarized with the awesome outdoor places to go in the area.

Describe Covenant in three words

Spikeball, chapels, and passionate

Favorite Covenant memory

The first night I spent in the dorms, I met Emily Hartshorn and Abby Post, two sophomores on my hall—they were O-Team leaders. They barely knew my fellow freshmen hall mates or me, but they got us all to squish in Abby's car and go to Waffle House in the wee hours of the morning. This memory sticks out because it's the first of several good memories I began to make at Covenant College.

Goal on Senate this year

This year I am going to work towards building a stronger building community than the one that is already in existence. I plan on doing this practically and creatively. I have some event ideas that will work towards accomplishing these goals, but I don't want to give them away. You'll just have to tune in to next year and move to Mac/Rymer.

Describe Covenant in three words

God, serving, and community

Favorite Covenant memory

I can't think of any specific event, but I love just hiking outside with friends. We are able to talk about God and see His wonderful creation. It gives us a way to somewhat forget everything and truly focus on Him with no distractions.

Goal on Senate this year

I want to try to bring the student body closer together. My ultimate goal is to have God work through me to help the Covenant community.
