TESOL

The certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) prepares students who desire to teach English to non-native English speakers. Students explore the fields of education, linguistics, English, and world languages to better understand how languages work and how to effectively teach a foreign or second language.

Program Overview

The TESOL certificate is designed for students who have an interest in teaching the English language to learners from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Students who study TESOL are often interested in missions or outreach to diverse populations in their communities. Completion of the TESOL certificate will include studies in linguistics, applied linguistics, and second language acquisition.  The final course students take when completing the TESOL certificate is a Practicum course in which the students gain experience teaching English to others. Past practicums have been completed with ELIC, the Chattanooga Public Library, New City Fellowship, and Neigh'tions.

Graduate Outcomes

Our students have gone on to teach both in the United States and abroad. Students are teaching English in a variety of contexts: elementary, high schools, universities, adult education, community-based programs, and church-based programs.
