Being Human Conference

March 20-22, 2023

The Being Human Conference exists to provide an interdisciplinary experience for faculty, students, and visitors to engage with topics that promote an understanding of Biblical anthropology as the basis of a liberal arts education.

This year’s theme will be exploring what ‘Imagining Our Neighbor’ means. We will pursue the development of empathy through the arts, literature, theology and other disciplines.

Daniel Nayeri, author of Everything Sad is Untrue, will be joining Dr. Mary McCampbell '94 spoke at the March 20-22, 2023 Being Human Conference.

As part of the conference, students and faculty were invited to submit works of art that explore “Imagining our Neighbor” through various artistic formats including visual art, creative essays or written art, and academic publications.

Daniel Nayeri Bio

Daniel Nayeri was born in Iran and spent some years as a refugee before immigrating to Oklahoma at age eight with his family. He is the author of several books for young readers, including Everything Sad is Untrue (A True Story) and Straw House, Wood House, Brick House, Blow: Four Novellas. Mary McCampbell

Mary McCampbell Bio

​​Dr. Mary McCampbell ‘ is an associate professor of humanities at Lee University where she regularly teaches courses on contemporary fiction, film, popular culture, and modernism. A native Tennessean, she completed her doctorate at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK); her research focused on the relationship between contemporary fiction, late capitalist culture, and the religious impulse. Her publications span the worlds of literature, film, and popular music, and this interdisciplinary focus is also present in her recent book, Imagining Our Neighbors as Ourselves: How Art Shapes Empathy (Fortress Press: April, 2022).
